The Day Before Easter: God is Comfort

Bible Story

There are no Bible verses that talk about what happened with the disciples between the time Jesus was buried on Friday, and when He rose from the dead on Sunday. We do know that the Sabbath, which is the Jewish holy day, began at sundown on Friday night. That meant they had to hurry up and bury Jesus by sundown because they were not allowed to do any work on the Sabbath. The Sabbath was a day to worship God and rest.

The disciples were probably pretty sad the day after Jesus died. They didn’t understand what He had told them about rising from the dead.  They thought they had lost their friend forever. Maybe they went back to the Temple to worship, maybe they rested, and maybe they even told stories about how much they liked being with Jesus. We don’t know for sure, but we can imagine how they felt.

Discussion Questions

1. How do you think the disciples felt the day after Jesus died?

They probably felt sad, confused, abandoned, angry. Answers will vary.

 2. What do you think Jesus did for those 3 days?

Maybe he was hanging out with God. Answers will vary.

 3. Do you have a hard time waiting for things?

Answers will vary.

 4. What are some things you can do to make waiting easier?

Answers will vary.

 5. Why do you think God was so quiet on this day?

Answers will vary.

1. This will be different and maybe a little hard but try your best. Sit quietly with your eyes closed, what do you think God is telling you? (Parents this will be hard and answers may be a little crazy but given time they will learn how to be still before the Lord).

 2. Let’s play Charades! Pick a Bible story you know and try and tell it to your family without using any words. For younger children, pick animals they can act out. Remember God was quiet at this time so you have to be too!

 3. On your own, make your own coloring sheet of how you think this day would have looked.

__________(Insert Child’s Name) were made for worship and rest.  Like the disciples, you were meant to know the joys of following and being with Jesus Christ; and like the disciples will also have times of sadness and sorrow.  May the God of all comfort comfort you when you are sad, or lonely, or even confused. May the God of all comfort wrap His arms around you and give you peace.
